UMP (Unified Media Platform)

1.4 Using the UMP Desktop Mode

The Desktop Mode of the UMP is optimized for the usage of a mouse and keyboard (UMP-R-3XX), although almost all functionality can be used with the common remote control (UMP-R-1XX).

When using the Desktop Mode with the common remote control, you will probably want to enable the Mouse Mode which is described in the next section.

If you are using a PC Remote (UMP-R-2XX) you cannot and do not need to enable Mouse Mode. The integrated mouse pad controller is a constantly enabled mouse, even though it has no functionality whatsoever in the OSD.

The Desktop Mode offers you a complete Linux based desktop environment, in which you can launch a number of applications, manage files more effectively, perform maintenance tasks, and much more. These topics are discussed later in this manual. For now we will concentrate on closing Desktop Mode applications launched from the OSD, and returning to the OSD.

If you launch a Desktop Mode application from within the OSD, like the Web Browser or File Manager in the Commands Menu, the application will be presented over the desktop background and the OSD will be hidden. Note that the OSD does not become inactive at this time – music will keep playing if left in the background, encoding jobs and recordings remain entirely uninfluenced.

To return to the OSD one typically exits the application one selected upon which the OSD is automatically returned to fullscreen operation, however you can freely operate the Desktop as if the OSD were inactive.

To stop the OSD (exit to Desktop Mode) you can navigate to Shutdown in the Main Menu, then Alternative Select it and choose Shutdown OSD or press Start/Stop OSD on the remote control.

To restart the OSD from the Desktop Mode you can right click on the desktop and select Return to UMP/OSD, click on the UMP OSD icon on the desktop (UMP-R-2XX and UMP-R-3XX only!) or press the Start/Stop OSD button on the remote control.

On the following pages there is an overview of the remote control (UMP-R-1XX) and keyboard (UMP-R-3XX) controls in the Desktop Mode.
